After Playing 10 Years in the NFL and Starting a Foundation to Impact Youth Literacy, Brooklyn Native Shaun Smith Releases an Inspirational Children’s Book

What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book, From Brooklyn To The Big Leagues, was inspired by my own life journey. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, I saw first-hand how important guidance, discipline, and believing in yourself can be. Football changed my life, but basketball and the people around me also played a huge role in shaping who I became. I wanted to create a story that young readers—especially kids from tough neighborhoods—could relate to and feel inspired by. I also wanted to show that your environment doesn’t have to define your future.

What made you choose this topic?

I chose this topic because it’s personal. The story reflects real struggles, choices, setbacks, and victories that many young athletes face. I wanted to write about perseverance, family support, and staying focused on your goals. There are a lot of talented kids out there who just need motivation and someone to believe in them. This book is meant to encourage them to dream big and stay committed to their path.

When did you first get the idea to become an author?

The idea came after my NFL career while I was coaching and mentoring young athletes. I realized that my story and experiences could help inspire kids beyond the football field. Writing a children’s book became another way for me to teach life lessons, motivate young people, and leave a positive impact. Once I saw how much kids connected with stories about sports, family, and overcoming challenges, I knew I wanted to become an author.

What do you want readers’ biggest takeaways to be from your book?

I want readers to understand that success takes hard work, discipline, and resilience. No matter where you come from, you can achieve your goals if you stay motivated and surround yourself with the right support system. I also want kids to know it’s okay to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them and keep moving forward. Most importantly, I want them to believe in themselves even when things get difficult.

What would you attribute your longevity in the NFL to?

I would attribute my longevity in the NFL to hard work, consistency, adaptability, and mental toughness. Playing 10 years in the league takes more than talent—you have to be willing to outwork people, learn continuously, and stay disciplined both physically and mentally. I also credit my support system, coaches, teammates, and family for helping me stay focused throughout my career.

What can your readers expect next from you?

Readers can expect more books, more community work, and continued mentorship for young athletes and students. I plan to continue building stories that inspire kids through sports, education, and life lessons. I’m also focused on growing the Shaun Smith 91 Ways Foundation, hosting camps, literacy programs, and creating opportunities for youth both on and off the field.
